Tingstad & Rumbel
Pacific Northwest duo and Grammy award winning artists Tingstad and Rumbel return to Vashon in October to celebrate their 25th year of making music together. Since 1985 they have delighted audiences across the nation performing their unique instrumental sound--Eric Tingstad's American finger-style guitar combined with Nancy Rumbel's melodic woodwinds.
Known for their beautiful original compositions, innovative treatment of popular standards and their immense talent, Tingstad and Rumbel (oboe, English horn and ocarina) create classically inspired music. With more than a dozen releases to their credit, they play music from America, the British Isles, Asia and Spain. A mix of original and covered tunes, Tingstad and Rumbel's tunes serve up Tex-Mex stylings, Caribbean rhythms, Americana fingerpicking and devotion to the American songbook.
The duo won a Grammy Award in the New Age category in recognition of Acoustic Garden which remained on radio charts for 18 weeks. The Chicago Tribune called Acoustic Garden 'a new kind of roots music.'
"Their latest project, Leap of Faith, is a masterful mix of covers and original songs performed with great balance in tempo and style. It’s one of the most entertaining and refreshing gems to come along in a long while." said radio host Dave Butler. For the concert, they will also have a two-CD anniversary release that includes their older, well loved songs adored by their fans over the years.
Rumbel grew up in Texas and continued her musical education at Northwestern University where she became interested in ethnomusicology, improvisation and dance. She was a member of the Paul Winter Consort for several years prior to her move to the Pacific Northwest. Tingstad grew up in Seattle and attended Western Washington University where he was trained in the Segovian classic guitar tradition. He is a product of influences such as Led Zeppelin, Hawaiian slack key guitar, Ravi Shankar and Martin Denny.
