Islaja (Fonal Records, Finland)
Islaja is Merja Kokkonen, a visual artist and musician living and working in Berlin, Germany. Her debut album Meritie (Fonal, 2004) gained praise in international music media such as The Wire, Dusted Magazine and WFMU. The follow up release Palaa Aurinkoon (Fonal 2005) caused even more excitement and created quite a stir. 2007 saw the release of her third album Ulual yyy (Fonal 2006) and released ...a live cd "Blaze Mountain Recordings" on Ecstatic Peace. Islaja records her music at home using a rainbow of instruments to accompany her personal vocal delivery sang in Finnish. Islaja is also a member of Hertta Lussu, a free folk super trio with Lau Nau and Kuupuu.
The tour will be in support of her new LP on Fonal titled Keraaminen, which will be out this August. This will be her first performance in Scotland since the excellent Approximately Infinite Universe tour in 2008 with the likes of Fursaxa, Es, The Skaters, Axotyl and various others. It'll be an intimate opportunity to catch Islaja's bridging of Finnish traditional song paths and the esoteric.

Helhesten
Employing clarinet, beat-up guitar, effected-voice and a variety of percussion, Helhesten craft an aching flux of soaring and swamped-out sounds. Whether the band are in the throes of a frenzied onslaught or an equally ravaged accumulating pastoral jam, they never escape the tranced-out web, which pulls them together as much as it holds them apart.

The solo guise of one half of Edinburgh's Hockyfrilla, Rhian Thompson brings found objects, assorted gizmos and toys to life like some sort of tape looping puppet master. Subtle, yet engrossing stuff!
