Organ Concert with Br. Jonathan Ryan, SJC
St. John Cantiusâ own Br. Jonathan Ryan, SJC, winner of the First Prize and Letourneau Prize in the Jordan II International Organ Competition last year, will present a 60-minute program of organ music on the parishâs Felgemaker/Kimball/Kilgen/Bogue Upper West Balcony organ. The program will center around the powerful, dramatic, and evocative Passion Symphony by Marcel DuprÃÃ,©. Originally an improvised four-movement work in 1921 Philadelphia concert, DuprÃÃ,©, one of the greatest organists, composers, and improvisers of the twentieth-century, depicts the life of Christ within the span of the symphonyâs movements: The World Awaiting the Savior, Nativity, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. Each movement additionally is based on a Gregorian chant melodic theme. Complementing the DuprÃÃ,© work will be the jovial Prelude & Fugue in D Major of J.S. Bach, one of the most popular of Bachâs major organ works known for its infamous series of D Major Pedal scales for the organistâs feet at the workâs outset. One of the most sublime of Bachâs organ works, the meditative, ornamented Chorale-Prelude on the penitential hymn O Man, Bemoan Thy Grevious Sin, will complete the program. Program: Prelude & Fugue in D Major, BWV 532 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) O Mensch, bewein dein SÃnde gross, BWV 622 Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) Symphonie-Passion, Op. 23 Marcel DuprÃÃ,© (1886-1971)
