Voice Recital
Escape from the hectic pace of the modern world for an hour with music of the three greatest French composers of a century ago: Maurice Ravel, Gabriel Faure's and Claude Debussy. Debussy's Trois Ballades de Francois Villon include a humorous rebuke of the mediaeval poet's mistress, a surprisingly poignant prayer to the Virgin Mary written for Villon's pious mother, and a tongue-twisting salute to the gossiping ladies of Paris. Gabriel Faure's Chanson d'Ãveis a series of musical tableaux on the creation of the world and mankind's fall from grace. Five of Maurice Ravel's Chants Populaires offer an entertaining close to the program. As their name suggests, these are folk songs and popular poems that Ravel arranged. They include a poem by Robert Burns, and Spanish, French, Italian and Hebrew folk songs that are sure to leave the audience humming.
