Student Jazz Combo Competition
Keyboardist, band leader and composer Herbie Hancock has said, There is no better example of democracy than a jazz ensemble: individual freedom to express but with responsibility to the group.
With this ideal of music as a personal growth opportunity within a cooperative community in mind, Healdsburg Jazz is inviting area high schools to participate in a new, free program for high school musicians: the Student Jazz Combo Competition.
The competition, which will happen on April 22, is a friendly one, emphasizing feedback and poise in performance rather than strict judgment. We know from experience that within a jazz combo, young musicians learn to take their turn, find their voice, agree and disagree, and come to a resolution all qualities needed for survival in our world today.
The Student Jazz Combo Competition is for Sonoma County musicians in grades 9-12 to explore their creativity by forming small groups for a juried competition.
