Tonight we step outside the folk idiom and bring you the invigorating sounds of The Funk Ark, a big jazz & Afrobeat band from Washington, DC. In their early days they reprised vintage Funk and Soul, creating music reminiscent of Lonnie Liston Smith or Herbie Hancock. But when frontman Will Rast started exploring the Afro Beat music of Nigeria and Ethiopia, the band shifted away from 4/4 tempos into wild, beautiful, polyrhythmic fusions. Theyve taken their compelling, danceable compositions to stages around the DC metro area, including to The Kennedy Center. We welcome them to upstate NY for the first time!
