PRAYING IN HER OWN VOICE
Praying in Her Own Voice
US, Israel/2008, English, Hebrew (with subtitles) 60 min. Documentary

Traditionally, women have not been allowed to engage in certain public religious practices.  For many years, a group of observant Jewish women, known as Women of the Wall, has fought the Orthodox Rabbinate in Israel in order to read Torah and enjoy the same religious rights as the men at the Western Wall.  Their movement has failed to gain the support of mainstream civil rights organizations in Israel but this is a look at a movement that is most definitely a very significant struggle-. This film explores the struggles and issues, often in the courts, to gain freedom for women as observant Jews to openly practice their Judaism at the Wall.

Following the film:

Rabbi Melanie Aron of Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos will moderate a panel discussion about the controversy with suggestions for resolution.
