| Description |
Saturday, July 11 9:45pm AELITA, QUEEN OF MARS Directed by Yakov Protazanov (Soviet Union, 1924) Cast: Yuliya Solntseva, Igor Ilyinsky, Nikolai Tsereteli
Like a delirious marriage of Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS and a BUCK ROGERS serial, AELITA is an incandescent example of early futurist Soviet cinema. The film starts on Earth where a dreamy inventor (Nikolai Tseretelli) kills his wife in a fit of jealous rage, and flees in a rocket ship to Marswhere bored, libidinous Queen Aelita (Yulia Solntseva) has been keeping an eye on him via interplanetary telescope.
In Russian with English subtitles
