ONCE UPON A TIME... there was a young boy left abandoned in the heat of a brutal civil war. A lowly servant girl comes to his rescue and risks everything to protect him. The war comes to an end and now the girl, Grusha, is forced to confront the boy's biological mother in a legal contest over who deserves to keep him. The comical judge, Azdak, calls on an ancient tradition the chalk circle to resolve the dispute. Who will win?
