Sideway Theater / TACO Dog Prod.Brooklyn, NY
Sideway Theater presents a fresh or "Sideway" view of theater.
Sideway Theater is creating a dialogue between NYC and Chicago. By regularly transferring productions between the two cities, Sideway is the first nyChicago Theater Company.
Founded in 1991 by New Trier High School Sophomore, Michael Stock, Sideway Theater produces world premieres, reinterpretations of classics, and modern comedic dramas.
Developing "The Sideway Approach", the ensemble works as a creative collective. This "Approach" marries the virtuosity of textual precision, which is a hallmark in British drama, with the raw, gut-wrenching emotional nakedness of American drama.
Sideway's brand of bold, original and socially conscious work premiered in NYC, Chicago and Austin. Sideway Theater derives its name from Robert Sideway, an English convict who utilized theater to help his fellow prisoners transcend bondage and lift themselves out of despair.
Sideway Theater also reflects the ideals of its namesake, Robert Sideway, who utilized theater to build community. Sideway Theater produces socially conscious drama. Sideway creates larger community by collaborating with Musical and Visual Artists. The artists read the script and respond in song or visual art. The songs are utilized in the performance and the visual art is hung in the theater gallery-style.
Sideway Theater lastly creates community through Philanthropic Partnershops. Sideway raises funds and awareness for groups addressing social issues explored in our plays.
