Spectrum Dance Theater (SDT) was founded in 1982 to bring dance of the highest merit to a diverse audience composed of people from different social, cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. SDTs principal objective is to make the art form of dance accessible through contemporary dance performances and high-quality dance training in a variety of dance styles. Three organizational components comprise SDT: the professional company, the School and outreach programs.
Under Donald Byrds visionary artistic leadership since 2002, the organization has embarked on an exhilarating transformation that has attracted world-class dancers, produced some of the most avant-garde works in contemporary dance, and generated local and national praise. In partnership with Seattle Theater Group, SDT presents its Main Stage production at The Moore Theatre where SDT is the Resident Dance Company. In addition, SDT has launched in 2006 the Studio Series at the Madrona Dance Studio to promote new choreographies and offer a more intimate experience to its audiences.
SDT has also established one of the most inclusive, affordable and diverse dance training program in the region, with over 60 classes per week offered to 500 students. SDTs Community Outreach consists of workshops, lecture/demonstrations, and performances in both SDTs studios and on-site in schools and community spaces throughout Seattle.
