Just a Steppe Away: Mongol Rally 2010United States
We are a team of three friends from Seattle, WA, USA set to drive approximately 8-10,000 miles from London to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in July 2010 to raise money and awareness for Mercy Corps and several other charities there, and to have a lot of fun along the way.
We will be doing it all in a small car with a tiny 1.2 liter engine, very ill-suited for the miles of highway, potholes, rocks, rivers, deserts and mountain ranges that we will encounter (that is what makes it an adventure, after all).
Why are we doing this? Well, first, the money being raised is going to some great programs in Mongolia. Second, the idea of driving 10,000 miles, 1/3rd of the way around the world, in a tiny car, thru countries that most people haven't even heard of (never mind thought of going to) sounds just too absurd and fun to pass up. We are going to get to see more of the world in 2 months than most people do in a lifetime. And we'll experience a huge range of people, cultures, foods, and environments. Throw into the mix breaking down and/or getting lost in the middle of nowhere, in a country that has a language that none of us can speak (or even read), and that is a sure recipe for adventure and a great way to have to interact with the people on more than just a tourist level.
Its going to be the trip of a lifetime, and definitely way over the line from ordinary. |
