Karen Bernard/Solo// Ouette
"an exquisitely crafted solo piece, visually gorgeous and thoroughly intriguing, emotionally captivating, a shot in the arm of audience imagination." Ultra ".she inhabits the stage with such fearlessness, adroit timing and quiet authority that she draws in the audience to live to live with her." New York Times "Were this Europe Bernard would be a revered film star and sex symbol." The Village Voice In Ouette Karen Bernardusing a laptop and projector, different spaces evoking the imagined and real experiences are created. With video footage of floor tiles, patterned fabrics and human silhouettes, Bernard creates a heightened film noir that is quickly fractured by the non-performative technical tasks of manipulating the laptop and projector. Ouette is loosely based on the François Ozon movie Swimming Pool. Bernard's character parallels the film's protagonist, an elderly English novelist who becomes involved in a dangerous sexual fantasy that is part her fiction and part her desire. New York City-based soloist Karen Bernard began studying dance at age three with her father, Steven Bernard, a company member with the 20th century pioneer Charles Weidman. Bernard grew up in a household that incorporated her father's dance school on a day-to-day level, with students crossing through the family space. Her sense of performance and performance art stems from this familiar blend of living and presenting. Bernard is a 2006 BAX10 award recipient for the founding and development of New Dance Alliance and the Performance Mix Festival, now in its 28th year. She is committed to nurturing an ongoing social dialogue among U.S. and international artists, one that exemplifies her lifelong commitment to performance. She has recipient of numerous residencies including Movement Research Artist In Residence and Bogliasco Fellowship. Bernard is a USA Projects artist.
