Learn about the genius of Henry Hobson Richardson, Frederick Law Olmsted and Dr. Thomas Kirkbride as they carried out the development of the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane. This history-focused tour will also introduce you to the present and future plans for the Richardson Olmsted Complex.
This two hour guided tour will take you to all the spaces included on the Welcome Tour (the partially restored Towers Building 45, former ward Building 10 immediately east of the Towers Building that was renovated 20 years ago for offices, and former ward Building 9 that has not been touched since 1974 when patients were moved to the modern buildings), plus several upper floors of Building 10 and Towers Building 45, including the former chapel.
Please note this tour is not wheelchair accessible: there is considerable walking, standing and stair-climbing involved.
