Kitka Presents: Advanced Vocal Workshop with Elizabeth Setzer
Study traditional folk songs from Bulgaria, Serbia and Georgia with Elizabeth Setzer in this five-week advanced workshop, designed for experienced singers who are comfortable singing in an exposed, one-on-a-part setting. Singers will receive guidance in vocal placement, refinement of stylistic subtleties (ornaments, phrasing, etc.), and deep blending of voices with fellow singers. Workshop is limited to eight participants, and commitment to the full five-week session is required. Interested singers should contact Elizabeth directly for a pre-workshop meeting prior to registration.
Elizabeth Setzer joined Kitka in January 2009 after spending a year in Bulgaria studying folk singing as a Fulbright Scholar. In 2011 and 2012, she served as Kitka's music director. Born into a musical family, Elizabeth has studied classical piano since age six, and performed in piano festivals and competitions as a teenager. She also studied jazz piano at the Berklee College of Music Summer Performance Program (Boston, MA) on full scholarship, and performed with Jazz Trax youth big band, which toured Europe and performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2000. During this time, Elizabeth also began writing original songs, performed as a coffeehouse singer/songwriter, and sang in a rock band that shared the stage with Le Tigre in 2001.
Also around this time, Elizabeth heard recordings of Bulgarian women's choirs and immediately fell in love with Balkan folk and choral music. She cultivated her singing and piano skills as a music student at Mills College (Oakland, CA), and after her graduation in 2007, decided to follow her passion for folk singing all the way to Eastern Europe. Elizabeth now performs with Kitka and as a solo artist, and continues to hone her skills as a director, singer, pianist, composer and arranger. She is also the co-founder of the world music fusion group, Novilunio, and is a recent recipient of grants from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts and the East Bay Fund for Artists.
