La Traviata, music by Giuseppi Verdi, libretto by Francesco Maria Piave is based on The Lady of the Camelias. It was first performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, March 1853. Courtesan Violetta Valry meets a new admirer, Alfredo Germont who confesses his love. Trouble intrudes with Alfredo's father who demands she renounce his son since the scandal of Alfredo's affair with her has threatened his daughter's engagement. Violetta resists but eventually agrees. Back in Paris, Alfredo denounces his former love cruelly and Douphol challenges him to a duel. Six months later Violetta has not long to live. Eventually, Alfredo learns the truth and is on his way to beg her pardon. But its too late and she dies in his arms. The title La Traviata means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or The Fallen One. Particularly worth noting in the cast is Angela Gheorghius La Scala debut as Violetta.
