Starting an Urban Ag Business
Anastasia Cole Plakias, a Co-Founder of Brooklyn Grange, will lead a survey of the different contemporary models of urban agricultural businesses, with a focus on New York City. Taking place in the multipurpose room at the Brooklyn Navy Yard's Building 92 Museum and Exhibition Center, Anastasia will cover a range of topics, including: the various goals and benefits of urban agriculture; different business entities a budding urban farmer might consider; the range of physical models -- from vertical farms to aquaponics, and of course rooftop farming -- and how well they address respective goals and challenges; integrating your business into the urban ecosystem; different enterprises, from flowers to bees to mushrooms, and recommendations on which enterprises and crops make most sense and are most profitable, and more!
After looking at a few case studies of existing projects, we'll have a breakout session to develop concepts that participants bring to the table, so feel free to come with an idea in mind for an urban ag project you'd like to workshop!
We recommend this session particularly to those folks hoping to launch their own agricultural endeavor in a big city, as well as anyone generally interested in urban ag, from urban farmers to urban planners and architects, environmental scientists, developers and community organizers alike!
This program takes place at BLDG 92 the Brooklyn Navy Yard's unique exhibition and visitor center. Come early to experience the past, present and future of the Yard through BLDG 92's interactive exhibits. FREE admission, Wed-Sun, 12-6pm.
