The Big-Brained Superheroes Club Holiday Fund for Nerdy Children
Support the fund for the nerdy!
While all the kids in The Big-Brained Superheroes Club could use a new pair of shoes and a new toy or two this holiday, the gift we are working to give them is much bigger. Our afterschool program at Yesler Community Center is dedicated to the idea that Big-Brained Superheroes deserve a place where they have the power and inspiration to develop their real-world superpowers, such as Creativity, Teamwork, and Persistence. In each club meeting, not only do we help our Big-Brained Superheroes find fun ways to work together to do homework and build learning skills, we also offer super nerdy hands-on projects and activities, including binary counting, electronics construction and deconstruction, and pop-up art creation.
Over the last three years, The Big-Brained Superheroes Club has held hundreds of meetings that have immersed the brains of well over 180 kids in academic and STE(A)M activities and engaged over a dozen former hallway lurkers in deeper, longer-term projects, such as developing the club's electronics and digital logic lab (supported, in part, by The City of Seattle and SparkFun). Now that our big investment in rapid innovation and club development is showing such positive effects, we need your help to build more and better Big-Brained Superheroes in the community.
Introducing BBS Accelerator The Big-Brained Superheroes Club is excited to level-up by offering more personalized learning adventures to our most dedicated Big-Brained Superheroes. With your help, outstanding Big-Brained Superheroes will have the opportunity and resources they need to initiate and lead their own individual or team-oriented projects through our new and improved BBS Accelerator program. BBS Accelerator provides higher-level, often self-directed, learning experiences as well as educational expeditions to relevant places throughout Seattle, including makerspaces, studios, and museums. All of these experiences are centered around individual Big-Brained Superhero goals, strengths, and challenges.
In BBS Accelerator, Big-Brained Superheroes are leaders of their own missions. With sidekick support, BBSes: * research, propose, and plan projects; * assemble, lead, and work in project teams; * assess, analyze, and present project outcomes; * become project facilitators themselves.
The superpowers we exercise throughout club meetings are constantly challenging Big-Brained Superheroes and sidekicks to experience and explore the universe in new ways. Over time, this process inevitably leads BBSes to envision new projects or want to achieve specific goals. We BBS sidekicks consider it a sign of success when we hear, "Can I make...?". Sometimes the goal is a go-cart/PowerRacer, other times it's a gingerbread house or a duct tape wallet. For every mission, we are searching for ways to make it possible and impossibly nerdy.
This is where you come in. While our Creativity, Adaptability, and Critical Thinking certainly enable us to make a lot with a little, there are some things these superpowers just can't buy. If you believe that all kids should get to choose their own adventure, then please support our Holiday Fund for the Nerdy and accelerate BBS Accelerator.
Thank you!
