BCW Awards Presentation & Lecture
Lynnwood Convention Center Lynnwood, WA
The Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington Awards highlight a Washington business and two individuals who have shown leadership in and significantly contributed to promoting and supporting breastfeeding as a vital part of the health and development of children and their families. The awards include: The Outstanding Employer Award, The Nancy Danoff, MD, Spirit of Service Award and The MaryAnn O'Hara, MD, Physician Leadership Award. In addition to the awards presentation, Laura Lindstrand, JD, Civil Rights Specialist with the Washington Human Rights Commission, (WSHRC) will speak at the event. Her lecture, "Freedom From Discrimination- Know Your Rights", will among other things, provide an introduction to RCW 49.60, the Law Against Discrimination. Participants will develop a greater understanding of the Human Rights Commissions newest jurisdiction, breastfeeding in a place of public accommodation. This will answer, or at least get the audience thinking about, important questions, such as what is a place of public accommodation, how far does that definition extend, and what activities are protected. Information will be shared about the number and types of inquiries and/or cases the Human Rights Commission has received related to breastfeeding, and some examples and scenarios will be provided. Ms. Linsdstrand's work includes educating stakeholders and the public on discrimination laws, conducting legal research for the agency, writing technical guidance and legal analysis for employers, legislative drafting and recommendations, and agency and statewide policy development and implementation. Laura was actively involved in providing the WSHRCs guidance during the development of the States disability definition statute in 2006 and 2007. In 2009 she headed collaborative efforts with the BCW to create educational documents about the new Washington State law to protect a womans right to breastfeed in public. Continuing Education Credits have been applied for. Event includes no-host bar and appetizers.
