The Interfaith Experience: Food, Inc. film screening & speaker Dhrumil Purohit
*** Please note that there are still tickets available for purchase at the door tonight.  Tickets are the same price $10 at the door. ***

The Temple of Understanding's Interfaith Experience, in partnership with the Mercy Corps' Action Center to End World Hunger, is proud to present the documentary that lifts the veil on the U.S. food system, exposing its underbelly.  Currently on the Academy Award short list for best documentary of 2009, Food, Inc. is a must see for all New Yorkers.

On Thursday January 28th, the Interfaith Experience is screening Food, Inc., as part of our ongoing Faith and Food series. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine advocates: "Don't take another bite till you see Food, Inc., an essential, indelible documentary." Variety magazine states: "Food, Inc. does for the supermarket what 'Jaws' did for the beach."

Prior to the screening, Dhrumil Purohit will discuss how food and faith interrelate from the Jain perspective.  Dhurmil will speak at 6:30 -- please arrive early to get a seat and talk to Interfaith Experience committee members. The movie begins at 7:00.

In addition, author Jared Koch will be signing his book "Clean Plates NYC," the guide to the tastiest and healthiest restaurants in New York.

All proceeds for this event will be shared between the Temple of Understanding and the Mercy Corps Action Center to End World Hunger.

About Food, Inc.:

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising and often shocking truths about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

About the Interfaith Experience:

The Interfaith Experience, launched in the fall of 2007, is a monthly program designed for young adults that offers grounding in the practices and history of cultures and religions. In addition, the series highlights contemporary artists, thinkers and leaders who provide insights on the role of faith (the history, meaning and modern thought) in the creative and intellectual process.  The series is produced by the Temple of Understanding.  Past speakers have included visionary artist Alex Grey, actor Linus Roache, the Venerable Nicholas Vreeland, and Greenfaith's the Reverend Fletcher Harper.
