Exploring the Aromas of Wine

Learn to sniff and swirl like a pro in this wine tasting, discussion, and book signing with James Beard Award nominated wine writer Alder Yarrow. During the event we'll explore five wines while Alder describes the unique aromas and style of each one. You will learn how to recognize and describe classic wine aromas and come out of the class with a new understanding of what makes wine so interesting.

During the event each participant will be presented with tastes of the following premier wines while we smell, taste, and explore what makes them special.

Alder's new book, The Essence of Wine, a collaboration with award-winning food photographer Leigh Beisch, is a visual exploration of wine's many flavors and aromas. It catalogs 47 of wine's essential flavors and aromas in large format color images and accompanying essays.

Alder is the founder of Vinography, one of the world's first wine blogs. He regularly speaks and presents at wine events around the world including Symposium for Professional Wine Writers at Meadowood in Napa Valley and the Aspen Food and Wine Classic. He has also appeared as a panelist and speaker for events and organizations such as Wine 2.0, The Commonwealth Club, and the Churchill Club. He is currently a member of the editorial board for Sommelier Journal magazine, and the author of the Sonoma and Marin County chapter of the recently released behemoth, Opus Vino, a finalist for the 2011 James Beard Journalism Awards. Since November of 2011, Alder has been a columnist for Jancis Robinson on her web site jancisrobinson.com. His "Alder on America" column focuses on current events, trends, and happenings in the world of American wine. Alder graduated from Stanford University, with time spent at Oxford University. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and daughter.
