Flowers for Algernon
In this ingeniously touching and intense drama, "Flowers for Algernon" tells the compelling story of Charlie, a mentally retarded man, and the experimental surgery he undergoes to increase his intelligence. The surgery has been performed successfully only once before, on a mouse named Algernon, and the play follows Charlie's life and relationships as they interweave with that of Algernon. Charlie, who rapidly changes from a moron to a genius, becomes far more intelligent than his teachers and doctors, and as he approaches the peak of his brilliance, Algernon shows frightening symptoms of regression. The play becomes a race against time in which Charlie tries to keep his new intelligence long enough to save himself and continue the new budding relationships he has made. Touching on moral and ethical dilemmas, this is a different kind of play: poignant, romantic, funny and tragic, but with hope of man's indomitable spirit.
