Angels in America Part I: Millennium Approaches
Red Room at Society Hill Playhouse Philadelphia, PA
Directed by Andrew Borthwick-Leslie
Prior Walter is about to die. His lover, Louis, leaves him. Louis' new lawyer-friend, Joe, is gay. And married. His wife, Harper, is hallucinating, and pregnant. Or not. Against the unforgiving backdrop of 1980's politics, sexual identity, and the quickly unraveling AIDS epidemic, a Mormon mother treks across the nation, an infamous lawyer gets disbarred, and an ex-black drag queen goes back to drag. And Prior Walter is about to die. But Prior Walter is a prophet. In a blend of fantasy, politics, humor, and compassion, Tony Kushner's Angels in America, Parts I and II: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes is an epic drama which follows a handful of discordant characters as they rend themselves and attempt to salvage their fraying pieces. In a re-examining of this sacred text, BCKSEET poses this question: Can people change-and if so, at what cost? This production was made possible with the generous support of the Charlotte Cushman Foundation.
