Beginnings: Learning Genesis and Beyond with Rabbi-Maggid Daniel Lev
Chochmat HaLev Berkeley, CA
In this ongoing class, we will focus on the first book in the Jewish Bible, B'reisheet, and some of its classical commentaries. We will also explore other Jewish spiritual writings from the Talmud, Musar (personal ethics), and Jewish mysticism. Most of the learning will be in English translation. We will use elements of the yeshiva learning style. After a moment of chant and meditation, the rabbi will introduce the sugiya (learning piece). People will then join a study partner to explore the texts provided, followed by a group discussion. We will integrate head and heart to experience how these teachings impact our daily life. You will gain greater facility in learning and understanding Jewish teachings, learn a little Biblical Hebrew, acquire grounded Jewish insights to guide your living, co-create a shared connection and sense of community, eat some teacher-supplied chocolate, which goes well with Torah study!
When: Every Wednesday, from October 14th continuing into June 2010, 7:30-9:30pm. Tuition: $350/475 for the series (members/non-members) or $15/20 on a drop-in basis.
All are welcome, and no background in Hebrew or Jewish text is necessary.
