Take Charge With Sustainable Energy
Meany Hall, University of Washington Seattle, WA
Denmark is a remarkable success story when it comes to becoming energy independent. During the oil crisis of the 1970s, Denmark was dependent on foreign oil for 98% of its energy needs. As a result of this crisis, Denmark committed itself to energy independence in part through the development of renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency.
Now, Denmark is a net exporter of energy and renewable energy technology is its #1 export.
Svend Auken, a member of the Danish parliament for over 30 years, was the cabinet minister for Energy and the Environment for over 9 years. Throughout his tenure with parliament, which continues to this day, and through his work in international venues such as the U.N. and the EU, Svend has been a persuasive advocate of sustainable energy. He is largely responsible for the policies that have made Denmark the energy leader it is today.
