Words
Word: a single distinct conceptual unit of language comprising inflected and variant forms.
Words: The text or spoken part of a play, opera, or other performed piece; a script
IN the summer of 2007, Daniel Watts and Derrick Baskin were cast in Disney's The Little Mermaid. Out of a quick growing friendship, Derrick discovered that Daniel was a poet. After hearing a couple of brilliant poems, he prompted Daniel to share his poetry with others. Daniel conversely challenged Derrick to share his instrument in a show of his own. Thus the birth of our show WORDS. After two years of procrastination, the two of them found themselves cast in another Broadway bound show MEMPHIS. During its pre-Broadway run in Seattle a benefit was organized to build a playground for the niece of a cast member. As fate would have it, both developed pieces without musical backing. Realizing their pieces complimented each other, they decided to collaborate. The unexpected impact from their performance motivated the two to further pool their talents.
Creating a show comprised of poetry and song became the goal. How the two would play off each other was the hitch. Wanting to be as exposed as the spoken word, the decision was made to treat songs like poetry, once again stripping the musical backing and allowing the poetry to live through the song created exclusively by the voice. Thus, entrusting the artist to deliver the stories, the messages, the WORDS naked/unimpeded.
