Forgotten Chicago McKinley/Brighton Park Walking Tour
The neighborhoods of McKinley Park and Brighton Park lie just to the west of their better-known neighbor Bridgeport, and perfectly fit the working class Chicago stereotype of "smokestacks and steeples." These neighborhoods were industrial from their beginnings; just five years after the 1871 fire, 11 factories and 27 brickyards had already opened their doors in McKinley Park, and the area's industrial base continued to grow rapidly for years to come.
On this tour, we will explore the overlooked industrial history of these Chicago neighborhoods, including portions of the first planned industrial park constructed in the nation, as well as an experimental Progressive Era park. We'll examine remnants from past eras, ethnic groups and social histories, including corner taverns, retail relics, historic churches, and overlooked architectural gems. As always, the tour will also take a look at old signs and other oddities that are hallmarks of Forgotten Chicago's tours and research.
Tour Details:
When? Sunday July 20 at Noon. Rain or shine.
Where? The tour will meet and begin in front of the 35th/Archer Orange Line station. It will conclude at the Western Orange Line station.
How Long? The tour will consist of about 3 1/2 miles of walking and will last approximately 2 1/2 hours.
How much? $15. Advance purchase is required. No walk-ups. All sales are final. No refunds or exchanges. If severe weather cancels the tour, credit will be issued for use on a tour of equal value.
