Mathematics of Love
Evergreen Valley College Arts Theater San Jose, CA
Award-winning Chicana writer, playwright and educator Cherrie Moraga directs professional Los Angeles-based and Bay Area actors in a stage reading of her new work. The play spans five centuries of indigenous memory and geography from Pre-Columbian Mexico City to Mission-era California to contemporary Los Angeles through the perspective of the main character Peaches, who is in mid-stage Alzheimers. Through the mind of Peaches, we discover a haunting Mexican Indian and female past requiring reconciliation on the cusp of a globalized 21st century. In the process, the play tells us a bit of how we might calculate the gains and losses of love, not just in our individual lives, but the life of a people. A Stanford professor, Moraga is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Rockefeller Fellowship for Literature, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and two Fund for New American Plays Awards.
