Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt) by G.F. Handel (1724)
If you love the music of Handel's Messiah, you'll love this show! Handel's most popular opera both in his own lifetime and today dramatizes the meeting of Julius Caesar with the embattled Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Handel's Giulio Cesare is one of the most well-known works in the Baroque operatic canon, with good reason: a tumultuous plot line interweaves a surprisingly intimate story of love, lust, political ambition, and revenge with some of the most exquisite melodies in all of western music.
This is the first time a fully-staged Baroque opera has been presented in Halifax with a professional orchestra on period instruments. This production, designed and directed by Allison Grant and conducted by Kevin Mallon, combines modern dress with authentic performance practice.
Fully-staged and costumed, with one of Canada's best Baroque orchestra, the award-winning Aradia Ensemble and Friends, on period instruments. Sung in Italian with projected English translations so you won't miss any of the drama!
These performances are part of the 10th Annual Halifax Summer Opera Festival, which brings together over 70 young international singers (most of them university students or young professionals) to rehearse and perform three full length operas over four weeks. All singers have been cast after rigorous auditions. For details of which singers are performing when, please check our website after July 26.
