| Description |
Saturday, July 25, 2009 8pm-1am Port City Music Hall (504 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101)
Kris Clark, the creator of ZOOTZ Dance Club fame, is planning with help from ZOOTZ fans, the ultimate reunion! It's been 22 years since the ZOOTZ Nightclub opened in Portland, Maine in July of 1987. Judging from the fact that over 1000 former ZOOTZ customers have recently joined the Facebook ZOOTZ Appreciation Page, people clearly still want to be a part of that collective experience, good vibe & great music of the club and that era. ZOOTZ played a big role in that early alternative music & social scene in Portland for hundreds of hipsters. Now those hipsters, in their late 30's, 40's, and 50'are eager to relive some of their glory days -- even for one night. They are also simply dying to see and reconnect with the many friends and fellow music lovers that they met and saw regularly at ZOOTZ dance nights and live shows. We're expecting hundreds of people to turn out for this event, with ZOOTZ devotees, original staff and DJ's flying in from all around the country.
Five of the original DJ's from the heyday of ZOOTZ are coming back to spin that night: Bob Look, Dale Charles, DJ Overload, Fred Kennedy and Chris Gauthier. With two large dance floors on two different floors (Remember the Cave/Rec Room downstairs?) you will get to hear all of the progressive dance musics you came to love: New Wave, Punk, Industrial, House in all it's incarnations, Hip Hop, Belgian NuBeat, Acid House, Grunge, Tekno, Trance, Drum & Base. It was at ZOOTZ where Maine caught an early glimpse of such notable bands as: Smashing Pumpkins, Babes in Toyland, Bad Brains, McCoy Tyner Trio, River Phoenix in Aleka's Attic, Dinosaur Jr, Queen Ida, Fugazi, The Mighty Diamonds, Schooly D, King Sunny Ade and too many more to enumerate here. ZOOTZ also hosted dozens of benefits for non-profits as well as being the only club to cater to the under 21 community with all-ages, chem-free concerts and dance nights
ZOOTZ left a lasting impact on the social consciousness of an entire generation of club goers in Maine. This reunion will bring together again the music, people & collective experience of the late 80's/90's all in one place. This will be THE ULTIMATE time capsule, revealing a long gone era that put Portland on the cutting edge of what was happening in music 20+ years ago. See you there on the dance floor!
Note: There will be ZOOTZ Reunion T-shirts for sale for $20 (Cash only)
Portion of proceeds from event to benefit OXFAM International.
NOTE: No one under 21 years old will be admitted. |
