Yoga in Dance: Odissi Dance Concert
YOGA IN DANCE: The word yoga means union - union of the self with the divine. In the practical life of a Hindu the term yoga embraces the various beans through which the soul seeks to be united with the absolute. Classical Indian dance has traditionally been viewed as a form of yoga. Odissi is one the 8 recognised forms of Indian classical dance traditionally performed by the Maharis or temple dancers as part of the daily rituals in the inner sanctrums of temples. Odissi would later see a much wider audience through the gotipua dance where young boys dressed as girls would perform outside the temple. The modern incarnation of Odissi is the result of painstaking process of reconstruction and revival passionately undertaken by the forefathers of the dance form. Characterised by its rounded fluid movements and scultpturesque poses Odissi is noted for its grace and lyrical beauty.

About this program:
Classical dance in India has traditionally been viewed as a form of Yoga. These dance forms are rooted in spirituality, the ultimate goal being Mokshya, or spiritual liberation for the performer and the audience alike. The process of learning classical dance, like Yoga, is one of intense Sadhana, or spiritual discipline, which demands complete physical and mental concentration for the practitioner. When examining a traditional Odissi repertoire, we can see the process through which the artist achieves his/her ultimate goal of spiritual liberation.
