True West
Lyric-Hyperion Theatre+Cafe Los Angeles, CA
In Sam Shepards greatest comedy, two very different, very drunken brothers write, wrestle and steal toasters in a wacky battle of wills thats soon the fight of their lives. After months wandering the desert, rough-edged Lee returns to his mothers suburban California home while she is away, to find his intellectual brother Austin intent on closing a Hollywood movie deal. Lee, a film novice, convinces Austins producer to buy a wild-west story instead. Reluctantly, Austin agrees to help write the western. The brothers struggle exposes the roots of their rivalry, and in a hilarious reversal, Austin turns to stealing neighbors toasters to prove he can survive in the wild, while Lee works desperately on the script. In a wacky battle of wills during the drunken days of writing, long-held resentments boil over into a surprise climax.
