5-31-14 - Newcomb Model Block Project Celebration
Join us for two community gatherings on May 31st to mark the completion of the Newcomb Model Block Project. Celebrate with LEJ and local residents by gardening and recognizing the neighbors who have been helping maintain the block over the past few years.

The Newcomb Model Block Project is an innovative synthesis of community stewardship, agency collaboration, public realm enhancement, and environmental benefit in one of San Francisco's most environmentally challenged neighborhoods. Our upcoming workdays look to celebrate the success of the project by promoting greater community participation and awareness about green infrastructure such s Newcomb Ave.

The new features from the project provide a repeating series of green areas integrally connected to the overall street scape design. Significant areas for storm water management, permeable surfaces, and a robust canopy of street trees along both block frontages were also added. The main goals of the project were greening the area, provide wastewater solutions by reducing storm water input to the neighboring treatment plant, traffic calming, and community improvement and ongoing care through community stewardship.

As one of the City's first green street projects. the Newcomb Model Block project was designed by neighbors and the city working together to make the streets and sidewalks safer and cleaner while improving the environment. The project was funded by a grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since construction was completed in 2011, the EPA has funded a study to better understand how the Newcomb Model Block project is improving the environment by reducing storm water runoff. This study has helped the City better understand how to design storm water infrastructure that beautifies the street scape.

Please join us May 31st between 10-2 celebrate this wonderful project. Food, drinks, fun and gardening tools will be provided.
