Live and Become
It is 1985, and Ethiopia is in chaos. Times are precarious for its small but ancient Jewish community. The Israeli Government implements a campaign to airlift as many Jews as possible to Israel. In the midst of this, the young son of a departing Ethiopian Jewish woman dies. The Jewish woman offers to take, in his place, an Ethiopian Christian boy. The Christian mother, knowing that she likely will never see her son again, admonishes him to "go, live and become." The boy does as she bids. The Jewish woman dies shortly after their arrival in Israel, and the boy, now known as "Shlomo," is alone in a strange land. He realizes that he must conceal his identity as a Christian. He eventually makes his transformation into Israeli society as what he appears to be, an Ethiopian Jew. This film addresses with sensitivity the profound issues of survival and preservation of identity, as well as the redemptive power of love. Recipient of the Golden Swan (Best Film) and Best Screenplay awards, Copenhagen International Film Festival (2005), and the Jury Prize for Best Film, Valenciennes Film Festival (2005).
