Berkeley Arts & Letters: LAC SU on I Love Yous Are for White People
As a child, Lac Su fled Communist Vietnam with his family in an arduous and death-defying boat journey. After being ssaved by a naval cruiser near Hong Kong, Lac, his parents, and his young sister all immigrated to Los Angeles. But, on the prostitute, drug, and gang-ridden streets of West Hollywood, the American dream they imagined seems far from coming true. Living in squalid conditions and barely making ends meet, his family struggles to forge its identity in LAs teeming cultural hodge-podge. I Love Yous Are for White People is Lac Sus account of finding a life of comfort and understanding while constantly made to feel like an outsider.
At the heart of his stirring story is the complicated relationship between Lac and his harsh, exacting father, whose desperation to provide for his family but to make them as tough-skinned as he is informs Lacs entire existence. One day, when Lac hugs him and tells him he loves him, his fathers searing answer is simply this: I love yous are for white people. Son enough, Lacs search for love and acceptance leads him to a dangerous gang experience. Drawing from deep within himself, he must transcend his limitations to create a better life for himself.
Lac Su holds a bachelors degree in social psychology from the University of California-Irvine, as well as a masters degree and Ph.D., ABD, in industrial-organizational psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology. He lives in San Diego with this wife, young daughter, and newborn twins.
