Description
Alice Waters, Renowned chef, author, and activist will speak about her inspirational experiences in bringing Edible Schoolyards in public schools at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica on May, 19th at 7:00pm.  Waters will be joined by 15 year-old protege Sam Levin, who founded an acclaimed sustainable garden for his public school district in Western Massachusetts.  This event, which will include a Waters book signing of "Edible Schoolyard" and "The Art of Simple Food," (also available for sale), a presentation, and brief question and answer, is to benefit Canyon Charter Elementary School, a public school in Santa Monica, where students, parents and faculty are trying to join together to create a sustainable school garden.
Waters is the well-known founder of Berkeley, California's Chez Panisse restaurant, and the author of nine books including, most recently, The Art of Simple Food and the Edible Schoolyard. In 1996 Waters created the Chez Panisse Foundation, introducing her ideas for edible education - through the flagship Edible Schoolyard Program at King Middle School in Berkeley, California.  For more information , visit www.chezpanissefoundation.org.
With Alice and Sam's visit, we can endow our community with knowledge and much-needed funds at the same time.
Limited tickets are available to the general public for $25 each ($10 for children under 18) on a first-come, first serve basis at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/61467/ or at the door for $30.00 (if seating is still available).  For more information,  e-mail Ivana Schechter-Garcia at ivanas@yahoo.com.
Canyon Charter Elementary School, located in the heart of Santa Monica Canyon, was granted one of the first Charters in the state of California, in 1993. As an affiliated charter school within the Los Angeles Unified School District, our status allows us more local autonomy and flexibility in choosing curriculum, in staffing, and in school governance.
