Recruitment Posters for Peace
The "Recruitment Posters for Peace" Exhibition Private Preview is doubling as AFSCs 2009 Annual benefit.  It will take place at Roosevelt Universitys Gage Gallery on Thursday, June 4th, from 6 to 9pm.   Gage Gallery is committed to showing contemporary work that addresses the important social issues of our time, and the Department of Art and Sciences at Roosevelt University is graciously co-sponsoring the event.

On display in the gallery will be up to 24 posters whose aim is recruit young people to be a part of the peace movement.  Half are being designed by high school students that AFSC is working with, teaching them graphic design skills as they discuss and become more familiar with militarism in order to inform their work.  The other half will be selected submissions from college students from around the region exploring the same themes.  All artists who have work in the exhibit will be invited to the Private Preview.

The night will entail attendees voting for their favorite posters and an ensuing student award ceremony in which the winning students will receive exciting rewards.  Additionally, there will be a Speaking Truth to Power Award Ceremony honoring human rights activist and singer/songwriter, Chris Inserra, as well as local high school activist, Denise Ferrusquia.  Chris Inserra will also share with us a participatory music experience and a light buffet will be served.

More information on Speaking Truth to Power Award Recipients:

Chris Inserra:  A mother of three, Chris is an Organizer for the School of the Americas Watch, a Volunteer in the Chicago Public School system where she teaches and works to assure that the student, parent and teacher voices are heard and  respected, an Organizer for Save Senn Coalition to oppose the growing militarization of public education and the  Co-music Director at Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ.  Chris is also a founding and ongoing member of the political folk group, Voices, whose music challenges the status quo while offering inspiration of  hopeful activism.

Denise Ferrusquia:  Denise is a senior at Kelly High School in the Brighton Park neighborhood of Chicago.  As an active member of the Social Justice Club at her school, she has been involved in several community service trips to New Orleans.  Last summer, she was a stand-out student in the AFSC Peace .Here..There...Everywhere Summer Institute.  Denise will be attending Lewis University in the fall.
