The one day workshop on 'Raising Chickens' presented Saturday March 29, 2014 can stand alone, or be combined with our "Building Animal Shelter" workshop on Sunday March 30. Camping accommodations available.
DAY 1 MARCH 29
Join us in exploring the world of chicken husbandry. Our workshop will guide you from planning to implementation with a focus on pastured poultry. We will address egg and meat bird management techniques for home and small commercial scale production. The day will feature expert guest lecturers, hands-on practice, and useful handouts. Lunch will be provided.
Topics include: * breed selection and flock succession * nutrition and feed * flock heath care * housing requirements * predator protection * humane processing demonstration * integrating poultry into diverse crop and livestock systems * economics
DAY 2 MARCH 30
A responsible farmers must consider the welfare of their livestock. This includes careful analysis of environmental conditions, housing requirements, and protection against the elements and predators. We will cover the many options for housing your poultry and other small livestock, including portable and permanent structures, fencing, and pasture managment. A hands on demonstration will teach attendees to build a low-cost, ultra-light chicken tractor for pastured poultry. Lunch will be provided
Topics Include: * site analysis * coop design * managing pasture * fencing * material selection * carpentry and building techniques
Camping accommodations are available. For those who register for the combined event, dinner and breakfast will be provided. You must provide your own camping gear.
