HeArt and Sole: A Rhythm Revue for Tap Lovers
The Hot Foot Honeys, Memphis' only tap dance company, presents its inaugural show, HeArt & Sole: A Rhythm Revue for Tap Lovers, on April 25-27, 2014. The show will feature dancers from a wide range of dance genres, including traditional African dance, traditional Irish dance, gumboot step, and tap dance routines from several different eras. Through collaboration with local professional dance companies and performers, the show will take audience members on an exciting trip from the very beginnings of tap dance through the groundbreaking styles of today.
"Many other cities, such as St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, and New Orleans have established tap communities," says Bell. "Memphis does not have a professional tap dance presence. I'm working to change that. I want to create a professional environment in this city, so the young generation of dancers right here in Memphis have the option to pursue tap dance."
Bell, who also teaches tap in Memphis, sees tap as more accessible than other forms of dance, including ballet. "Tap is just so much fun. It is the only form of dance where you are both dancer and musician," Bell says. "With this show, my goal is for audiences to experience the excitement and joy of rhythm tap while also learning about its roots in other forms of dance."
Guest artists performing with the Hot Foot Honeys include Artistik Approach, Bridging Souls Productions, Inis Acla School of Irish Dance, Wayne M. Smith, and steppers from Phi Beta Sigma. The show will run April 25-27, 2014 at Evergreen Theatre in midtown.
