Child of Hungry Times
Washington Ensemble Theatre Seattle, WA
Written and performed by Bridget Bailey Directed by Jay O'Berski Based on the writings of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya. Made possible in part by a Benenson Award in the Arts from Duke University.
Seattle native Bridget Bailey mounts the tour of her critically acclaimed one-woman play at the Washington Ensemble Theatre in Capitol Hill. Child of Hungry Times is a comedic drama based on the works of one of Russia's most prolific and dangerous female authors.
Child of Hungry Times was created in Bailey's final year at Duke University and combines original writing with extensive primary sources, including rare translations of Petrushevskaya's works. Bailey breathes life and humor into these powerful writings, which were held underground until the demise of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. The play is an intriguing combination of light-hearted, laughable moments and piercing, thought-provoking monologues illuminated through six characters developed through Bailey's extensive research.
