Description
From the 1890s to the 1940s, the Jewish Lower East Side was teeming with nearly a half million Eastern European Jews.  Streets were packed with pushcarts and people.  Although living and working conditions were difficult, the Jewish immigrants were able to practice their religion openly.  There was a strong sense of family and community, which can still be seen today.  Many of the shops we visit have been in the neighborhood for over 70 years and are owned by the original families.

You will learn the meaning of Kosher, and what food items are not Kosher and why.

Below are the stores we visit and foods* we try:

Knishery, dating to 1910--Knish G,D (occasionally)

Appetizing store, dating to 1914--Smoked and/or Pickled Fish D (occasionally)

Delicatessen, dating to 1888--Hot Dog B,G

Old-fashioned Candy store--Halvah N

Matzoh factory, dating to 1925--Matzoh (when in production), G

Bread bakery, dating to 1935--Bialy, G

Pickle shop--pickle tasting (3 types)

Pastry shop--Rugelach, G

* For those with dietary restrictions and allergiesSamples are Kosher-style. D=Dairy, B=Beef, N=Nuts, G=Gluten
