Description
STRAIGHT is David Schmaders hilarious and subversive solo play about the world of conversion therapy, where gays and lesbians are reputedly cured of their homosexuality and made straight. Plunging into the heart of this highly charged territory--from going undercover at ex-gay support groups to an intensive crash course in Christian heterosexuality deep in the heart of Texas--Schmader blends an essayist's insight with the spark of stand-up comedy to confront difficult questions, reject easy answers, and get to the bottom of what it means to be straight.

After a smash six-month run in Seattle in 1999 directed by Dan Savage, Schmader toured a new production of STRAIGHT--directed by Chay Yew with support from the Mark Taper Forum--to Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, San Diego, and Portland, OR. The two new Annex shows are in advance of Schmader's upcoming performances of STRAIGHT at Dallas WaterTower Theater in March 2009. This will be the Texas-drenched shows long-awaited Texas debut. Pray for us.

CRITICS ON STRAIGHT
'Brilliant, biting, and fall-off-your-seat funny. An ambitious, fiercely intelligent exploration of being gay in America.'  Seattle Weekly

'Straight exacts sweet revenge, as Schmader spins sentence after sentence with wit, style, and flashes of naughtiness.' Los Angeles Times

'Fabulously intelligent. Witty, risky, and important.' SF Weekly

'Beautifully written, with a stand-ups ear for the absurd.' Seattle Times

'Perfect. This is a stripped-down show with a script that sings. Schmaders performance is a delight.' San Diego Union Tribune
