KING LEAR
Patsy Rodenburg (National Theatre, London) directs this electrifying, world-class ensemble production of KING LEAR.
"Unvarnished, dangerous, sexy, humane...this production will blow any 'idea' of Shakespeare to smithereens. This is Shakespeare for a contemporary audience - in all its savagery, joy and humanity."
The ensemble includes Robert Mandan as Lear (2005 LA WEEKLY and OVATION award winner, Best Actor), Diane Venora as The Fool, Lawrence Pressman as Gloucestor, Omar Metwally (2004 Tony nominee) as Edgar, Patrick Muldoon as Edmund, Tim Murphy as Kent, Jayne Brook as Goneril, Tyne Rafaeli as Regan and Mili Avital as Cordelia, Bo Eason as Cornwall, Clay Storseth as Albany, Christian Contreras as Oswald, with Joe Reegan, Simon Mainwaring, Joanne Baron, Garry Morris and Robert Merrill completing the cast.
This is the inaugural production of the new Los Angeles based -Tier 4 Company - the ensemble of Lear formed during two years of workshops conducted in LA by Patsy Rodenburg and Lisa Robertson.
The Keyword -- Unvarnished. The Tier 4 mission - To strip this play back and unleash the power of a great classic text to all audiences; giving the play back to the actor to explode on the word... the muscularity and emotionality of the word...without embellishment, artifice or heavy design or concept, banishing any idea that Shakespeare is not for contemporary audiences.
Patsy Rodenburg is one of the preeminent voices of world theater. She has worked with many of the great Lear's of recent times during her residencies at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, London and has found an actor in LA, Robert Mandan, who excavates something in Lear that is unique and profound. It is he who has inspired the choice of King Lear as Tier 4's first production. In Patsy's words, "one does not do a Lear, unless one has uncovered one of the greats to play the man."
Robert Mandan won the 2005 LA WEEKLY and OVATION Best Actor awards, for his role of Davies in Pinter's "The Caretaker".
Tier 4 chose Electric Lodge in Venice for its intimacy, energy, focus and a commitment to new and groundbreaking work that particularly grows out of the Los Angeles community.
