Beggars in the House of Plenty
Director Larry Moss has assembled a veteran cast to bring to life John Patrick Shanley's profoundly moving and surreal story about an Irish-American family at war with itself. John Patrick Shanley, nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay "Doubt" adapted from his award winning play of the same title, has written this deeply autobiographical work with an intensely human hand and heart. Set in the Bronx in the 1950s and 60s, and told through the eyes of the younger son, Johnny, Shanley wrestles with the myths and realities of a family's struggle, as their instinctual need for one another barely holds their violence in check. Part memory, part hallucination, and part truth, this highly stylized and poetic play explores the bond of family as they each painfully search for love. Darkly funny and fast-paced, BEGGARS IN THE HOUSE OF PLENTY takes on the demons of the past that are never quite put to rest because they are flesh and blood. The play's accomplished cast include Francesca Casale as "Ma", Jack Conley as "Pop", Denise Crosby as "Sister Mary Kate", David Gail as "Joey", Lena Georgas as "Sheila" and Chris Payne Gilbert as "Johnny".
This first rate production scores on all counts-Powerful, passionate-outstanding acting-excellent cast-humor and searing insight-imaginative! TOLUCAN TIMES- Feb. 26, 2009
