Chocolate Safari: Rice Boulevard, Rice Villege
Advance paid reservations are required for all tours.
We've chosen an especially romantic itinerary for this Chocolate Safari. Way beyond chocolate-covered strawberries.
Meet your tour guide at the Discover Houston Tours table inside Ruggles Cafe Bakery on Rice Boulevard in the Village.
Learn about the history of chocolate and the story behind Houston-born Ruggles as you get to know the other participants and sample an optional yummy treat, perhaps a chocolate almond croissant with coffee. Restrooms are available.
We like to have an even dozen on each tour, with the guide making it a baker's dozen.
One of the goals of the safari is for each person to bag a chocolate trophy but, because of differing tastes and budgets, we do not include the cost of your food and beverages in the tour price. As a result, you can choose to purchase some tiny treats or pounds and pounds of chocolate at each of our four stops. We promise not to count the calories.
Leave Ruggles and walk with your guide a few blocks through Rice Village to Cloud 10 Creamery, a new creation by Chef Chris Leung that features 10 different ice creams daily. If he's available, Chef Leung will chat with our group about the concept behind his shop. After you sample the ice creams, try out milkshakes, ice cream bars, ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes, push pops, sundaes, or pies and tarts. As you savor your choice, watch Leung and his staff create more ice cream in their spacious and pristine open kitchen. Perhaps they'll be making milk chocolate and black sesame, Nutella and marshmallow, or spicy dark chocolate. Restrooms are available.
Walk a few blocks with your guide through Rice Village to Chocolat du Monde, a petite boutique devoted to chocolate from around the world. Sip some homemade hot chocolate and sample the homemade fudge as you learn about Belgian (Leonides and Neuhaus)and French (Michael Cluizel) imported chocolates or purchase a Clark bar, a rum cordial, or, yes, one of their special chocolate-covered strawberries. It's chocolate heaven.
Last, but definitely not least, follow your guide a few blocks to Rice Boulevard and the Sweet Paris Creperie & Cafe. Finish your tour with a Nutella crepe, perhaps adding strawberries and bananas, and a hot or iced Mayan chocolate beverage. If you have sated your inner chocoholic, you can try their savory crepes -- perhaps turkey, grapes & brie or truffled caprese.
Come down off your chocolate high by staying at Sweet Paris and watching the world walk by as you sip a beer or wine, returning with your guide to Ruggles, or strolling around Rice Village and savoring more delights.
