Farruco, Antonio Fernandez Montoya, "El Farru" was born in Sevilla in 1988. He adopted the artistic name Farruco after his late grandfather, the legendary flamenco dance master El Farruco. His entire life he has been witness to the purest form of the art of flamenco. He began dancing professionally as a young child and has continued performing all over Spain as well as internationally to great critical acclaim.
Dubbed "la madre de la buleria" by her father, the legendary flamenco dance maestro El Farruco, Pilar Montoya Manzano, "La Faraona" is known for her deeply Gypsy festera style dancing and her ability to transmit a full range of emotion. She has lived and breathed Gypsy flamenco from the time she was born and has performed all over Spain and toured the entire world appearing alongside her nephew Farruquito and her sister La Farruca. She first came to San Francisco in the 1980s with the touring Broadway production "Flamenco Puro" where she shared the stage with many of the great flamenco figures of the time such as her father El Farruco, La Fernanda de Utrera, El Gito and Manuela Carrasco.
In town for the Bay Area Flamenco Partnership's Festival of Flamenco Arts and Traditions, both Farruco and Faraona will appear with their group Los Farruco on Friday, March 6th at the Palace of Fine Arts.
The Festival of Flamenco Arts & Traditions has been made possible in part by a Living Cultures grant from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts in partnership with the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the James Irvine Foundation.
