First Anual Jim Taylor Memorial Lecture with author Susan Cooper
The Puyallup Public Library is honored to host author Susan Cooper who will deliver the first annual Jim Taylor Memorial Lecture on Friday, September 27th at 7:00 pm.  The lecture will take place at the Liberty Theater located at 116 West Main in Puyallup, Washington.  This lecture is the kickoff to the first annual Puyallup Festival of Books, the Puyallup Public Library's new signature cultural event.  Susan Cooper will be promoting her new novel, "Ghost Hawk", a deeply moving historical fantasy that relates the intertwining stories of a young Native American boy, Little Hawk, and John Wakely, son of colonial New England settlers. The lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing.  Books will be available for purchase at the event through Kings Bookstore.  Per Susan's publisher, Simon & Schuster, attendees must purchase a copy of "Ghost Hawk" to be able to have other titles by Susan Cooper signed.

The new lecture series is named in honor of Jim Taylor, a beloved English teacher at Rogers High School in Puyallup who inspired generations of students with a love of literature and poetry.  With this lecture we honor teachers and librarians like Jim Taylor, who gave kids the right book at the right time, forever changing their lives.  Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" sequence inspired a generation of readers with its palpable sense of both awe and wonder as well fear and menace, as her protagonist, Will Stanton, learns that he is one of the Old Ones, a group of people especially set apart to battle the forces of the Dark.  Her books taught young people how powerfully literature can make you feel.

The Puyallup Festival of Books will take place on Friday and Saturday, September 27th and 28th, and will also feature legendary fantasy writer, Ursula K. LeGuin.  All events are open to the public.  Tickets are required only for the Susan Cooper lecture.
