Rub-A-Grub Feat. DJ Spinna + DJ Akalepse // SUN 9/1
Do or Dine and Sound Liberation Front are teaming up again for "Rub-A-Grub", a food and music backyard party featuring DJ Spinna (Wonderwax), DJ Akalepse (Truth & Soul/ Plane Jane) and a three part menu crafted by Do or Dine's chefs.
Continuing the good vibes from Memorial Day's "Rub-A-Grub", Do or Dine and SLF are hosting another beats and bites backyard party this Labor Day Weekend. The event will kick-off in the afternoon and feature three rounds of food and drinks, each coupled with different DJ set. Round-one will feature appetizers and bloody mary's, followed by a second round of appetizers and beer + shot special. Taking us into the evening will be round three, which will include a featured cocktail and whole roast pig by Do or Dine's Justin Warner. After 10pm the party will continue at neighboring watering hole, One Last Shag.
DJ Spinna is a Brooklyn born and raised Dj, producer, remixer and artist. He began his recording career in 1994 as a member of the the underground hip hop group Jigmastas. Throughout his career he has broken down musical barriers between the worlds of hip hop, deep house, soul and jazz working with everyone from Mos Def, Masta Ace, Pharoahe Monch and Eminem, to Eric Roberson, N'dea Davenport, and Mary Mary to Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers and Sergio Mendes. He has other notable side projects to his credit such as the Polyrhythm Addicts, the Free Radikalz and his alter ego Chopp Master Flopp.
Obsessive crate digger DJ Akalepse is known for running the full spectrum of soul music. Together with Rich Medina, he hosts the widely respected weekly NY party PROPS. Before that he was Resident DJ at the legendary & now closed NY Venue APT. Coming up as a Battle DJ, Lepse learned early the importance of moving the crowd. His humility and endless respect for music has garnered him accolades in soul, funk and hip hop circles the world over. With a heavyweight stash of 20,000+ records he plays classic tunes right next to obscurities, always pushing the listening audience a little in a sincere effort to break new records and reintroduce slept on tunes simultaneously. Akalepse has also put his vinyl passion into his role as label manager/ A&R of Brooklyn-based Truth & Soul Records, famous for releasing hot wax from artists like El Michel Affair or Lee Fields.
Do or Dine has been paving an innovative culinary trail in Bed-Stuy since in 2011, receiving wide acclaim for their fun and eccentric approach to cuisine or "fine diving" as the owners call it. NY Magazine notes, "nothing is as straightforward as it seems. There are (savory) doughnuts stuffed with foie gras mousse, and fried dumplings under a veil of melted cheese an Asian-fied play on nachos."
Sound Liberation Front has been hosting music events in Brooklyn since 2007. From underground parties to large scale productions, SLF events have been featured by NPR, Time Out NY, Village Voice and National Geographic. Last year's Coney Island Reggae Beach Party was featured in the 101 Best Things To Do This Summer and Top 5 Waterfront Events by Time Out NY.
