Hawaii Shakespeare Festival: As You Like It
As You Like It includes cross-dressing, family feuds, a Roman God of Marriage, homoeroticism, dance and song, love-at-first-sight, and is one of Shakespeare's most celebrated comedies.

Rosalind, Shakespeare's consummate heroine, is exiled from the corrupted court of Duke Frederick and travels with her best friend and cousin, Celia, along with the inimitable Touchstone, to the golden forest of Arden (biblical and Arcadian in tenor). Disguised as a young man, Rosalind is chased by the shepherdess Phebe (who scorns the love of the shepherd, Silvius), and counsels Orlando (who she loves) in order to cure him of his love.

Love, in all its many forms--unrequited love, courtly love, bawdy physical love, sisterly love, paternal loveis explored in a series of juxtapositions. Considered both a celebration and satire of the pastoral form, As You Like It presents a string of oppositions (Court versus Country, Nature versus Fortune, Appearance versus Reality), weaving a pattern of entertaining harmonies and counterpoints.

As You Like It shows how the life-affirming spirit of love, reconciliation, self-knowledge, wisdom and the goodness of Nature can triumph over blind fortune and injustice. Instead of the denouement, marriage is the ultimate climax of love; As You Like It confirms marriage as an institution, along with the return of civilization's other institutions, made possible not by the forest, but by the natural goodness in us all.

Starring Jenilea Heath as Rosalind, Patrick Karjala as Orlando, Nai1a Aguirre as Celia and Owen Bleach as Oliver.
