Some students decide at a young age that they are simply not writers.  This class encourages students to move past their writing phobia through the power of individual choice: our experienced teachers will help writers choose a project that excites them and see it through to completion.  Love Minecraft?  Write a fantasy adventure starring Steve, the Minecraft hero.  Obsessed with dinosaurs?  Share your knowledge through a research paper or illustrated book.  Once students connect with a topic, writing becomes an exciting opportunity to share their ideas rather than a teacher-assigned chore.

The class will be taught using a workshop model in which teachers interact one-on-one with each student, offering specific feedback and guidance throughout the writing process.  Each two-hour session will include an interactive lesson, ample writing time with one-on-one mentoring, and time to share works in progress.  Attendees are expected to bring a notebook and writing utensil and their favorite book!

Nicole Hughes is a lecturer at San Jose State University and the Acting Director of the Center for Literary Arts.  She recently completed an MFA in fiction writing from San Jose State University, where she now teaches composition in the English & Comparative Literature Department. Her story "Impasto Portrait" was published in Liebamour.  As an MFA student, she was awarded the 2011 Ann Lillis Creative Writing Scholarship and the 2009 and 2011 James Phelan Literary Award.

Jessica Senn is a fiction writer and 5th-grade teacher at the Phillips Brooks School in Menlo Park. She holds a BA in English from Stanford University and an MFA in fiction writing from San Jose State University. In her classroom, she uses the Lucy Calkins' Writer's Workshop method, which emphasizes brainstorming, revision, and personalized feedback, to bring out the best in young writers. Her story "Christmas in the Desert" was published in Cicada, and she is currently at work on her first young adult novel.
